Maternity Education

At Plantation General Hospital, a first-class childbirth experience begins with childbirth classes. Whether you are a first-time mom or not, we offer a variety of maternity classes to answer your questions about pregnancy, nutrition, exercise, childbirth and infant care.

Tour Plantation General Hospital’s Maternity Center

A free tour is offered several times on month. This hour and a half tour will provide the expectant family with information on the pre-registration process, labor admission, and what to expect during your hospital stay. A brief slide show includes orientation to the facility, normal newborn procedures, infant safety and security. A walking tour of the Labor and Delivery unit and the Women’s Pavilion unit is provided so the new family can become familiar with the hospital.

Baby Care Class

Class offered twice a month
Duration: 2 and ½ hours
Cost: $10.00

This two and a half hour class is designed for first time parents who desire to be totally prepared for the care of their newborn.

Topics include:

  • Bathing of the Baby
  • Care of the Umbilical Cord and Circumcision
  • Diaper Changing
  • Normal Newborn Characteristics
  • Soothing and Feeding of the Baby
  • When to call the Pediatrician

Baby & Me

Classes offered on select Tuesdays from 12:30-1:30pm
Cost: $5.00 per class

Led by registered physical therapists, this class teaches parents ways to interact with babies of ages 6 weeks to 12 months that stimulate the baby’s physical, social, and cognitive development. Learn to read your baby’s cues to know when they are most receptive to stimulation and interactive play, which will encourage them to meet their developmental milestones. Participants should bring a mat, quilt or beach towel, water and a snack.

Baby Saver Infant CPR

Class offered several times a year
Duration: 2 and ½ hours
Cost: $10.00 per person

Would you know how to react if your infant was choking or stopped breathing? Come learn the basics of infant CPR and Obstructed Airway from a certified CPR instructor.

Breastfeeding Class

Class offered twice a month
Duration: 2 and ½ hours
Cost: $10.00

Breastfeeding is a natural process that has many benefits for babies as well as moms. It is also economical. This two and a half hour class will help you gain the skills and confidence for a rewarding and successful breastfeeding experience. Fathers and/or coaches are encouraged to attend.

Topics include:

  • Advantages of breastfeeding
  • How breast milk is produced
  • Proper latch-on and positioning techniques
  • Helpful hints for the first few days
  • Nutrition while breastfeeding
  • Work and Breastfeeding

Childbirth Preparation

Classes should be completed by your 34th week of pregnancy.

Class offered once a month
Duration: 1 hour
Cost: $40.00

These classes are useful for helping expectant couples learn about the entire childbirth process from the first signs of labor to tips on newborn care.

Topics include:

  • Signs of Labor
  • Breathing and Relaxation Techniques
  • What to expect during your labor and the delivery of the baby
  • Medication and anesthesia options during labor
  • Hospital routines
  • Normal delivery and delivery by Cesarean Section
  • Postpartum Care
  • Newborn characteristics and care

Prenatal Yoga Class

Cost: $50.00 for 4 classes (need not be consecutive)

When paired with a cardiovascular exercise such as walking, yoga can be an ideal way to stay in shape during your pregnancy. This age-old practice keeps you limber, tones your muscles, and improves your balance and circulation, with little, if any, impact on your joints. Yoga is also beneficial because it helps you learn to breathe deeply and relax. Led by a certified prenatal yoga instructor, women will learn appropriate poses to maintain a healthy pregnancy.
